Song of the Week: “Now My Feet Won’t Touch the Ground” by Coldplay

Coldplay has a knack for crafting musically complex, lyrically gripping tunes, but this little gem from the end of the Prospekt’s March EP draws its stunning beauty from its simplicity.  It’s short, it’s soft, and it’s irresistibly sweet.  This is the kind of song that I could just sit and listen to for hours on end without getting sick of it.  Enjoy!

“Now My Feet Won’t Touch the Ground” by Coldplay

Let me go, boys, let me go
Push my boat from the highest cliff to the sea below
Rocks are waiting, boys, rocks await
Swoop down from the sky and catch me like a bird of prey

Now my feet won’t touch the ground
Now my head won’t stop
You wait a lifetime ’til you’re found
Now my feet won’t touch the ground

Singing now my feet won’t touch the ground
Now my head won’t stop
You wait a lifetime ’til you’re found
Now my feet won’t touch the ground
Now my feet won’t touch the ground

Song of the Week: “Courageous” by Casting Crowns

It just doesn’t end.  Every single band that I’ve ever loved is coming out with a new album this fall, it seems, and Casting Crowns is no exception.  Their new single, “Courageous”, is a call to the men of our generation to step up and take charge, to be men of courage, men who aren’t satisfied to sit back and watch when they could be making a difference – and a reminder that the only way to truly fulfill our calling in life is in the strength of God.  We were made to be courageous, but so many men today choose the coward’s way out, living lives of irresponsibility and apathy, and it’s tearing them and their families apart.  Something has to change, and we as men have to be the ones to do it, to buck the trend and make things right.  Casting Crowns has never shied away from using strong words to address important issues, and this anthem for true manhood is another great link in that proud tradition.  Lyrics and music video after the break.  Enjoy!

Song of the Week: “Slumber” by Needtobreathe

It seems like all of the great musicians are putting out new albums this year, and Needtobreathe is no exception.  They recently released two new singles from their upcoming album “The Reckoning”, and while I would definitely encourage you to check out both “Drive All Night” and “Slumber” at their website, Needtobreathe.net, I decided to focus in on “Slumber” as the song of the week because of its message.  In their typical roundabout poetic style, Needtobreathe urges us to stop living in the just-enough-to-get-by haze of mediocrity, to wake up from our slumber, climb out of bed, and see the glory waiting just outside.  Don’t sleep your life away – baby open up your eyes.  Link and lyrics after the jump.

Song of the Week: “On My Way” by Phil Collins

My friend Scott introduced me to this song this summer, and as I embark on the journey from this precious moment in my life toward the next, I can’t think of a song that sums up my feelings better.  I’m always sad to leave Lake Ann behind when the summer ends, but that sadness pales in comparison to the joy that fills me when I realize that, at last, I’m on my way home again with the ones I love the most: my family.  So, tell everybody I’m on my way, and I’m loving every step I take.  I hope that my path brings me back to Lake Ann time and again, but no matter what happens, there’s nowhere else that I would rather be than on my way – on my way forward, on my way upward, on my way home.  I can’t wait to see what the journey holds for me next.

Song of the Week: Hot Air Balloon by Owl City

Say what you’d like about Owl City, that his songs are too similar, that he overuses autotune, that his songs make no sense, but there’s one thing that you can’t deny: Owl City makes the happiest music on Earth.  When Owl City is playing, you can’t be angry or sad or even a little down because you’re too busy smiling and bobbing your head.  It’s like a giant lollipop for your ears; you know, the big swirly ones that could cover Bigfoot’s entire face.  Out of all of Owl City’s indomitably cheerful tunes, however, one has arisen as my very favorite: “Hot Air Balloon”.  There’s just something about the joy in the music and the childlike wonder and imagination in the lyrics that never fails to brighten my day.  You can find the song and the lyrics after the break; and remember, kids: don’t actually stick lollipops in your ears.  It’s just a bad idea.

Song of the Week: “Fix You” by Coldplay

“Fix You” is a lot of things.  It’s a beautiful song, it’s a moving song, and it’s also a very tricky song.  At first glance, there are some problems with the lyrics.  After all, no matter how hard we try or how well-meaning we are, we can’t fix each other.  We can support each other, we can be there for each other, but only God can repair the flaw all of our souls.  Nevertheless, at its core, “Fix You” has a positive message, one that is uplifting and well put.  When everything goes wrong, when your life falls apart, the value of a friend, someone who will give of themselves until they have nothing left to lift you back up to your feet, is immeasurable.  It’s that kind of selfless love that ultimately shines through in the music and lyrics of “Fix You”, a song that exudes so much triumphant, hopeful energy that you can’t help but smile and sing along.  Video and lyrics after the page break.

Song of the Week: “Reveal” by The Wedding

This week’s song is a little harder than my usual song-of-the-week fare, but don’t let that turn you away.  “Reveal” is the fifth song from The Wedding’s excellent EP “The Sound, The Steel”, and while the lyrics in the verses are fairly cryptic, the poetry of the chorus blows me away every time, and the overall message is clear: The Kingdom is on the way, and it’s time for us to stand up, take our side, and fight the darkness.  Plus, the music is just fantastic.  As always, you’ll find the embedded song and lyrics after the page break.  Enjoy!
