“Mad World” by Michael Andrews

I was recently introduced to this stirring song, and at first I didn’t know what to think of it.  The poetry and the music are chillingly beautiful, but it’s one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard.  This is the world through the eyes of someone who doesn’t know what to do with it.  He can see the tragedy and the emptiness of a life that goes nowhere in a world that is getting madder by the day, but he has no answer.  The lyrics are profound and challenging, both in reminding us of the hope that we have and the fact that many have no hope with which to face the mad world in which we live, and every time I hear them I notice something new about the level of expression they contain.  Give “Mad World” a careful listen, and consider how many of the familiar faces all around you are going nowhere and in need of someone to know them, someone who won’t look right through them but will see them for who they are and tell them they are loved.  You can make a difference in their world, or you can leave them running in circles.  What will you do?

Lyrics:

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere

Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles its a very, very
Mad world, mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me, what’s my lesson?
Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles its a very, very
Mad world, mad world, enlarging your world
Mad world
