Song of the Week: “Sticks and Stones” by Jónsi

There’s something inimitably special about movie scores.  No other form of music can create the same ravishing kaleidoscope of emotions as a masterfully composed soundtrack can.  Movie music inspires us to boldness, lifts our spirits, moves us to tears at exactly the right moment – it is the backbone of every great film.  One aspect of movie music that we often overlook, however, is the effective use of song in the end credits.  A parting song that fits with the tone of the film is like the coconut icing on a big German chocolate cake, a perfect final touch to a delightful treat.

“Sticks and Stones” by Jónsi is definitely a coconut icing kind of a song.  Featured at the end of “How to Train Your Dragon” (which is an exuberant, uplifting, and thoroughly pleasant movie), “Sticks and Stones” sums up the joyful, triumphant feel of the film perfectly.  The artistic, exclamation-filled lyrics, while a little hard to understand (and partially in Icelandic), really add to the emotion of breathless wonderment that pervades the song.  Fast-paced yet friendly and gentle, the music soars and whirls just like one of Hiccup’s exhilarating dragon rides.  Overall, “Sticks and Stones” is a unique, joyous, emotionally uplifting song, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

And here are the lyrics:

Eyes open wide, blinded by the sun now
Orange and white, dark red, green and yellow
Rainbow colors! Do not hide, see the view!
Step aside, go through!

Against the light, too strong, blow a fuse now
Everything bright, new songs, burning shoes
The look in your eyes! Break our bones into half!
Scream and shout and do laugh!

Let yourself… go (Oh Oh Oh)
Let yourself… go (Oh Oh Oh)

Stay close to me
Count one, two and three
Up in through your sleeves
Bursting through the seams
Open your eyes and see – You see

Inn um ermar, upp hryggjarsúluna
Yfir skóg, flæðir niður brekkuna
Allt upp í loft! Ég mun aldrei gleyma!
Því ég mun aldrei!

Hleypur um, rífur, leysir flækjurnar
(Upp með rótum) með blik í augum!
Stórmerki, undur, brjótum bein í sundur!

Let yourself… go (Oh Oh Oh)
Let yourself… go (Oh Oh Oh)

Stay close to me
Count one, two and three
Up in through your sleeves
Bursting through the seams
Open your eyes and see

Stay close to me
Count one, two and three
Up in through your sleeves
Right beyond the trees
Show you how you’ll be

Stay close to me
Count one, two and three
Up in through your sleeves
Bursting through the seams
Open your eyes and see – You see

Stay close to me : Count one, two, three
Up in your sleeves : You’re right beyond trees
Stay close to me : Count one, two, three
Up in your sleeves : Burst through the seams

Open your eyes and see
You see – You see

English Translation of second verse:

In through the sleeves, up the spine
Over forests, flows down the hill
Everything upside down! I’ll never forget!
‘Cause I’ll never!
Runs about, scratches, loosens up tangles
(Torn up by the roots) With a look in the eyes!
A miracle, a wonder, we break bones asunder!
